Pan Macmillan

Pan Macmillan is one of the leading publishers of fiction, nonfiction and children’s books. Names such as Macmillan, Pan, Picador and Macmillan Children’s Books are among the best known imprints in general publishing.

Harold Macmillan, Earl of Stockton (1894–1986), British Prime Minister from 1957 to 1963, was the grandson of the founder of the publishing house, Daniel Macmillan. Following his retirement from political life, he even became chairman of the company.
General fiction and nonfiction is published under the Macmillan imprint. Mass-market paperbacks are published under the "Pan" imprint, which features authors such as Wilbur Smith, Minette Walters, James Herbert, Clare Francis, Ken Follett, Richard North Patterson and David Baldacci.

Picador is a highly influential literary publisher. The imprint was established in 1972 with the aim of publishing international authors of world renown in paperback (and later hardback) format. Its list of authors includes Colm Tóibín, Ben Sherwood, Helen Fielding, Alice Sebold and Nobel Prize winner V.S. Naipaul. In 2004 Picador author Alan Hollinghurst received the Booker Prize for his novel The Line of Beauty, and in 2005 Picador won again with John Banville’s The Sea.

Macmillan Children’s Books publishes a wide range of high quality material for children. Picture books for pre-school children are also published by Campbell Books and Priddy Books.

Boxtree and Sidgwick & Jackson provide focus for Pan Macmillan’s brand, entertainment and media publishing.

"Harold Macmillan cared nothing for other people's backgrounds and judged them only on their intelligence and character. His social policies were formed by his own generous spirit and unquenchable desire to help the underdog, and to ensure that everyone in this country had the opportunity of a decent life."
Edward Heath, British Prime Minister (1970-1974)
